Fisheries Program
Demands on Saskatchewan’s fish resources are increasing. Loss of habitat, pollution, winterkill, and failure of natural reproduction place additional pressures on fish populations. These factors narrow the gap between the supply of fish available for anglers and the demand for them.
Changes in fish habitat need not be great or widespread to harm fish. One can think of fish and their habitats as pieces of a closely-fitted puzzle. The pieces of this puzzle include food, water, shelter, and space. Alterations in one or two critical factors can reduce the capacity of a system to sustain healthy fish populations.
Fish enhancement improves fish habitat, increases the sustainable supply of game fish, and diversifies fishing opportunities for anglers. It also emphasizes the development of locally sponsored projects by encouraging conservation groups, cottager’s associations, community clubs – anyone with a keen interest – to participate in projects designed to improve and maintain Saskatchewan’s fish resources.

Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Enhancement Projects
Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation branches conduct local fisheries projects in conjunction with the provincial government’s Fish and Wildlife Development Fund. With guidance from the SWF biologist, the branches are the main force behind enhancing much of Saskatchewan’s fisheries habitat. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation also partners with many government, non-government, and stewardship organizations to complete fisheries enhancement projects.
Fisheries Projects:
- fish stocking;
- stream enhancement
- developing and operating spawning beds and marshes
- installing, operating, and maintaining lake aeration systems
- developing and operating rearing ponds
- constructing, installing, and maintaining mini-hatcheries
- removing fish barriers
- developing and maintaining trout ponds
