BigFoot Snowshoeing Program

The current popularity of snowshoeing could be based in the old adage, “if you can walk, you can snowshoe.” The BigFOOT Snowshoeing program’s objective is to provide Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation members, community organizations, schools and youth throughout Saskatchewan with the opportunity to get outside in the winter and have fun.

Advantages of Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is an activity that requires no special training, coaching, facilities and is now limited by age; The little girl pictured above was not quite two when the photo was taken. It can be an individual activity or one shared as a family or with friends. It is also an excellent means of physical recreation. A study in USA Today stated that on moderate terrain and snow depth, snowshoeing burned 600-800 calories during a 60-minute session. That is more calories than running, cycling, or even cross-country skiing.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine's publication, Health and Fitness Journal for January/February 2001, "Research has shown that snowshoeing provides a moderate to strenuous workout and raises the heart rate to within ACSM guidelines to improve cardiorespiratory endurance and positively alter body composition." The Journal goes on to state, "Snowshoeing is an attractive wintertime activity because it is simple, low-impact and available wherever there is enough snow.

Snowshoeing Benefits include:

  • Developing a respect for challenge and sense of adventure associated with outdoor education and recreation.
  • Learning and applying skills and techniques for winter travel.
  • Practicing care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Nurturing respect for the environment.
  • Developing safety sense by learning proper dress for outdoor activities.
  • Having FUN!!
