Coyote
Coyotes are now the most common wild dogs in Saskatchewan.  Once more restricted to the southern part of the province, they have increased their numbers and moved farther north. They have adopted well to people’s alterations to the landscape, in farming areas and near and around towns and cities.

With the elimination of the Grey Wolf, the less conspicuous Coyote has taken its place as “top dog”.  While wolves form family groups and even larger packs in winter, Coyotes are more solitary.  Adult pairs live and hunt together, and small packs may also occur, but these do not attract the same attention as the wolf once did.

Coyotes are still not appreciated by farmers and ranchers, and are also hunted or trapped for their fur. Still, they are successful survivors, and their eerie wailing cries can be heard in many areas around the province.
