Willow Ptarmigan
Willow Ptarmigan come south to northern Saskatchewan for the winter, from their breeding range in the North West Territories.

During the summer, their plumage is brown, but they change to a completely white colour in winter, camouflaging them from predators. No other birds change colour in this way, although some mammals do.

During their winter visit, Willow Ptarmigan travel in small flocks and feed on the buds of willows and other shrubs or trees. They may be very tame, and stay here until spring calls them back to their northern nesting ground.
