Barren-ground Caribou
There are over one million of these caribou in Canada. Most of them live in one of five large herds.
They are the mainstay of northern Indian and Inuit communities, who rely on the animal for food. The wolf is a natural predator, and culls the herds of the weakest and oldest members.
Caribou are often bothered by flies and mosquitos and will run for many kilometres to escape them. Barren-ground caribou are slightly smaller and lighter in colour than their brothers to the south.
