American Martin
Also known as the Pine Marten, this tree-dwelling weasel is closely associated with large blocks of mature coniferous forests in Saskatchewan. Martens have an insatiable appetite and curiosity. These traits can make martens appear almost tame.
Voles and mice make up most of their diet but they will eat whatever is available -from birds to berries to insects and eggs.
Martens are highly valued for their fur, also known as sable. Due to extensive logging and trapping, martens have been extirpated from many parts of their former range. However, where given a chance, martens are successfully making comebacks.
Martens were driven extinct in the Cypress Hills, but a small population has re-established itself from 32 martens released there in 1986
