Short-tailed Weasel
Also known as Ermine, the Short-tailed Weasel fits the description most people have of a weasel. Relatively small, sleek, fast and ferocious, the Short-tailed Weasel is common but rarely seen.
Although they primarily travel on the ground, they are capable swimmers and can even climb trees. After a rapid dash, they pounce on their prey with all four legs and bite it through the back of the neck. They eat mice and voles and occasionally take young rabbits and birds.
The white, winter fur of Saskatchewan Long-tailed Weasel, Least Weasel and the Short-tailed Weasel is called Ermine. Interestingly, these species only adopt white fur in the
northern parts of their range, such as in Saskatchewan.
